With digital audio (your computer music), headroom is necessary or else clipping will occur. What is this you ask? Headroom is the amount of space between the your peak level and the point at which clipping occurs. On a digital meter (e.g. Ableton’s channel meters), the maximum permitted level is 0dB. Clipping, on the other hand, is when audio output exceeds the particular system’s limits resulting in compression of the waveform, which essentially makes everything equally loud, ruining a song’s dynamics. To ensure proper headroom, the master output, which is the output of all individual channels, must not exceed 0dB. This means that all individual levels must be kept pretty low. A safe level is -12dB. To lower the level, reduce the gain or volume knob from the source (in this case the sampler) rather than with the channel fader. Decreasing the level this way will set you up for proper gain staging throughout the course of your song.
